Some religions suggest that the path to healing, salvation or nirvana is to deny desire. A thorough biblical Christianity sees that desire is a part of how we are made, in fact necessary to our journey. Desire exists in us, and is a very active part of shaping who we are. The question, of course, is whether we will train our desire on the good.
Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk, deep thinker, prodigious writer and faithful follower of Jesus. If you’re not familiar, you would do yourself a favor to read some of his work. A great starting point is “Seven Storey Mountain,” Merton’s spiritual memoir.
